The latest issue of the Wyoming Library Roundup magazine features the Big Read (see pages 14-16) and all the events at the Wyoming Book Festival. The Big Read kicks off at the festival in Cheyenne September 15 with a living history performance of Willa Cather by Lynne Swanson and a keynote by Past Wyoming Poet Laureate Robert Roripaugh.
The Wyoming Big Read now covers 14 of the state’s 23 counties! Goshen County Library in Torrington has just joined the state’s reading and discussion of My Antonia by Willa Cather. The library is working with the local school district to schedule book discussions and other great local programs in Goshen County. Check with your local library for details, or watch for the Wyoming Big Read calendar of events when it becomes available in late August.
U.S. Senator Mike Enzi and his wife Diana are long-time advocates of reading and literacy. For Wyoming’s first Big Read, the two are serving as honorary co-chairs. Read Sen. Enzi’s message about the project on the Wyoming Big Read web site.
The Wyoming Big Read web site has just been launched at www.wyomingbigread.org. Find links to participating county libraries, reader’s guides, teacher’s guides and more. The Big Read is a community-wide reading and discussion of one book — Willa Cather’s My Antonia. Wyoming’s Big Read starts this September, with a big kickoff at the Wyoming Book Festival. This event is part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. This fall, people in 13 of Wyoming’s 23 counties will all read, discuss and fall in love with the same book: My Ántonia by Willa Cather. The Wyoming Center for the Book is one of 117 organizations that received grants to support Big Read programs between September and December 2007.
